Event Details

Enjoy food, fun, prize drawings and plenty of entertainment when Encore celebrates the program’s birthday on Friday, August 8, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Henderson Fine Arts Center 9000 rooms.  This year’s theme: “Encore Birthday Picnic” presents a chance to enjoy an outdoor picnic inside.  There will be activities like a “walk in the park” cake walk, games like bean bag toss and croquet, and even music from Four Corners Harmony.

Encore, the Senior College at San Juan College, offers classes and much more designed for students ages 50 and older, and the birthday party is an excellent opportunity to learn about the vibrant program.  Encore offers approximately 200 classes each year, ranging from practical skills like Computer Basics as well as fitness classes such as Encore Golden Waves Water Aerobics to interesting topics such as The Art of Bookbinding or World Religions.  Instructors will be available at the birthday party to discuss the various classes.

While there, sign up for the program’s annual membership, which is discounted from $25 to $20 during the party only, and then register early for fall classes.  Encore membership offers numerous benefits, including a discount on an annual Health and Human Performance Center membership and free admission to San Juan College theatre and music productions.  Learn more about all the membership benefits at the birthday party.

This fall also marks changes to the San Juan College tuition and fees that result in decreased costs for Encore students.  Encore students are waived the general fee and only charged the $0.75 student activity fee added to each credit hour. The San Juan College Board of Trustees approved the following tuition and fees for Encore students”

  • Tuition and fees for students 65 and older is $5.75 per credit hour for both residents and non-residents.
  • For students under 65, the resident tuition and fees will remain at $41.75 per credit hour
  • Nonresident tuition and fees will change from $105.75 to $123.75 per credit hour for students under 65.

This tuition structure is based on the Senior Citizens Reduced Tuition Act of 1984 that allows adults 65 and older in New Mexico to take up to six credit hours a semester at a community college for only $5 per credit hour. For more information, contact Encore at 566-3293.
