Event Details

The San Juan College Planetarium’s AstroFriday presentation for Friday, May 9, is Tour of Mars.  Show times are at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.

This is a live presentation using the star projector and computers to virtually tour the red planet.  First, view the surface of Mars as a globe then descend to the surface to view all of the sites of successful robotic landing missions.  Then, observe the night sky as it would appear from the surface of Mars.  See objects such as the martian moons Phobos and Deimos in the planetarium sky.

Following the video presentation, there will be a short sky show, using the Planetarium’s star projector to depict the night sky of early-May.

There is no admission charge, but there is a maximum seating capacity of 60 in the Planetarium, so seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to preserve dark-adaption, no one will be admitted late once the show has started.

Weather permitting, a free public stargaze with telescopes will be held at 9:30 p.m., in the courtyard behind the Planetarium after the last show. The stargaze will last a maximum of one hour.

There is no capacity limit for the stargaze.  Plan to view our nearest neighbor, the Moon, our highlighted planet Mars and the ringed planet Saturn.   Star targets for the evening feature the “double-double” stars Alcor and Mizar and the binary north star, Polaris.

If weather conditions are particularly favorable, participants may also see such deep-sky objects as the Beehive Cluster in Cancer, the Coma Berenices Star Cluster, the globular cluster M13 in Hercules, the Sombrero Galaxy in Virgo, and the galactic pair, M81 and M82, in Ursa Marjor.
