Event Details

Area high school students, grades 10-12, will want to mark their calendars for the fifth annual San Juan College Latino College Day, Thursday, April 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Henderson Fine Arts Center.

Organized by San Juan College’s ENLACEprogram (ENgaging Latino Communities for Education), this year’s event will focus on building relationships and collaborating with area high school students.  The event is designed to disseminate information regarding higher education as well as motivate high school students to continue their education with guest speakers, breakout sessions and workshops.

ENLACE is part of a nation-wide education program, funded through the New Mexico Department of Higher Education with over 1,400 current participants.  The Northwest ENLACE Region was established at San Juan College in 2007.  Its function is to create a network of support and access for students and families.  The ENLACE Family Center is the home for school-based programs, parent involvement and high school leadership programs.

“The mission of ENLACE is to increase the high school and college retention and graduation rates for Latino and other students in New Mexico while smoothing the transition process from one level of education to the next,” says Mabel González, director of the San Juan College Northwest ENLACE Region.

ENLACE works closely with the Hispanic Latino Center on the San Juan College Farmington campus.  The center is located in the Learning Commons and has experienced phenomenal growth since its opening in July of 2011.

“The Center was created to serve students as a resource for their educational achievement by providing retention programs, advisement and support as well as creating a cultural awareness among the campus and local communities,” says Brenda Méndez de Andrade, coordinator of the Hispanic Latino Center.  “Over 623 campus and community members have benefitted from workshops, programs, information sessions and cultural events.  We are open to high school students and college parents, as well.”

While the center focuses on the cultural aspects of the Hispanic population, it is open to all students.
