Event Details

The San Juan College Child and Family Development Center (CFDC), in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), will celebrate The Week of the Young Child, April 7 – April 11.  This year’s theme is “Early Years Are Learning Years.”

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by NAEYC.  The purpose is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and recognize the importance of early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

The public is welcome to attend the Family Fair, Friday, April 11, from 10 to 11:15 p.m., in the CFDF Front Parking Lot, which is located on the East Side of the Farmington Campus adjacent to College Boulevard. There will be more than 20 booths, including the Farmington Public Library, Farmington Sycamore Center, Big Bounce, Families First, Wiggle & Jiggle and many more.  The community is invited to visit the fair to find out more about programs that support children and families in San Juan County.

Throughout the week, the festivities will include a variety of other child centered activities.  These will include a kick-off parade around the campus, obstacle courses, a trike-a-thon, and a safety day with visits from police, paramedics and the Air Care helicopter. This year will also feature a Cultural Day on Tuesday, April 8 with a Pow Wow Drum Group and Dancers performing from 10-11 a.m. on the front lawn of the CFDC.  Ms. Northern Navajo, Ms. Southern Ute and Ms. Indian Farmington will all be in attendance. At 3 p.m., bagpiper Wes Pringle will perform.

San Juan College Assistant Vice President for Learning Lisa Wilson, Farmington Municipal Schools Superintendent Janel Ryan and others will be on hand for an opening parade, proclamation and presentation of Blue Ribbons for Kids on Monday, April 7 at 9:30 a.m. The parade will begin in the CFDC and the proclamation will take place in the Little Theatre Courtyard. Blue Ribbons for Kids is an organization that focuses on preventing child abuse and neglect. During the proclamation CFDC staff will be wearing blue shirts and blue ribbons tied on the trees in the courtyard to create awareness of the need to keep kids safe and families strong.

The CFDC is also hosting its 2nd Annual Art Auction featuring children’s artwork that is framed and displayed in the CFDC hallway throughout the week.  The artwork will be available to bid on through a silent auction.  Bidding will end Friday, April 11, at 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by The Parents and Educators Club, whose members will utilize proceeds to benefit children.

San Juan College CFDC and San Juan Regional Medical Center Children’s Discovery Place are the only NAEYC five-star accredited childcare facilities in San Juan County. The College’s CFDC received their reaccredited last year, with a 100-percent-pass rate in the ten NAEYC accreditation standards.

Parents and families of CFDC students are invited to participate in all of the events surrounding Week of the Young Child. For more information about the CFDC or the Week of the Young Child activities, call the Child and Family Development Center at 566-3383.
