Event Details

The Broadening Horizons Speaker Series at San Juan College is pleased to welcome renowned Southwestern artist Amado Peña to San Juan College on Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m., in the Henderson Fine Arts Center Performance Hall for Inside the Artist’s Studio, a lecture moderated by San Juan College Foundation Board President Bev Taylor.

Amado Peña is best known for his paintings that depict Hispanic and Native American figures and the vivid landscape of the Southwest. Aside from his recognition in the art world, Mr. Peña is also known as a champion of public education. He is a graduate Laredo Community College as well as what is now Texas A&M Kingsville, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. For 16 years following his graduation, Mr. Peña was employed as an art teacher in the Texas Public Schools. In 1994, he established the “Art has Heart” Foundation – an organization that provides opportunities for low income students in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona, allowing them to further their education in the arts.

Inside the Artist’s Studio will include clips of the documentary Amado M. Pena Jr: From Culture to Canvas, a 60-minute film about Peña’s humble upbringing, Mestizo heritage and rise to acclaimed contemporary Southwest artist. A reception in the 9000 Rooms will follow with an opportunity to meet Mr. Peña in person, purchase prints and have them signed. The evening presentation and reception are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Broadening Horizons Speaker Series is sponsored by Citizens Bank through the San Juan College Foundation. For more information about Inside the Artist’s Studio, contact the San Juan College Box Office at 505-566-3430.
