San Juan College to send Laramie Project to the stage

The San Juan College Theatre Department will present The Laramie Project on March 12, 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre.

The Laramie Project is a play written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. There is strong evidence that Shepard was targeted because he was gay.

Theatre Department Director Mollie Mook-Fiddler hopes this play will allow audience members “to take a deeper look into how one community worked through a terrible act of violence that occurred.”

“This play allows us to take a deeper look into the human condition and ask ourselves how we as a society can prevent crimes like this from occurring,” Mook-Fiddler said.

Theplay is comprised of interviews with residents of Laramie and others who were affected by Shepard’s death. The play also contains a compilation of media reports along with court transcripts and other documents related to the case. The script is styled as a docu-drama and is a compilation of real-life events.

“The dialogue in the play comes directly from members of the Laramie community,” Mook-Fiddler said. “Kaufman and his team worked to cover every end of the spectrum in this case, so that he could present a more objective sampling of the community’s reaction to what happened. There are many different voices in this production.”

The Laramie Project contains adult content and is not recommended for children under the age of 13 as mature themes, descriptions of violence and profanity occur, although much of the profanity from the original script has been removed.

Tickets for the show are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and can be purchased at For more information, call the San Juan College Box Office at 505-566-3430. For more information about the show, call Mollie Mook-Fiddler at 505-566-3242.
